Public statement

Environmental position

A small footprint is mostly a consequence of being one person working remotely. This statement separates what I have chosen from what is simply true of the structure.

Scope

Forged Frameworks is the trading name of Daniel Boyland, a one-person learning design consultancy. There are no premises, no vehicles and no employees. The operational footprint consists of a home working setup, occasional travel, compute for AI-assisted build workflows, and a small volume of business purchasing. This statement covers all four, and is deliberately specific about which of them I have actually made choices about.

Commitments

  1. Clause 1

Remote by default, travel by exception

Client and subject matter expert collaboration runs online as standard. I travel where the work genuinely needs presence, such as an on-site meeting a client requires, and not as a default courtesy. Programmes spanning multiple sites and organisations are built without the associated travel.

Check this byAsking any client how many working sessions across a full programme build were held in person.

  2. Clause 2

Deliverables are digital, and revisions replace rather than obsolete

Programmes are delivered through Articulate Rise 360 and Moodle. There are no print runs, no shipped workbooks and no stock of printed material to dispose of when guidance changes. When a standard is updated, the live version is corrected in place, which matters in regulated sectors where content changes more often than most.

Check this byAsking any client what physical material was produced across a programme build.

  3. Clause 3

Compute is named as a footprint, not treated as free

AI-assisted build workflows are a real part of how I work and they carry an energy cost. Where a provider publishes renewable-powered regions and offers a choice of region, I select accordingly. I would rather state compute as part of the account than leave it out because it happens to be invisible.

Check this byAsking which providers and regions were used on a given build, and checking those regions against the provider's published energy disclosures.

  4. Clause 4

Purchasing goes to zero waste suppliers where a real alternative exists

Consumables and supplies for the business are bought from zero waste businesses wherever a genuine alternative exists. Where none does, the purchase is made conventionally and is not dressed up as something else.

Check this byAsking for the suppliers used. The list is short enough to share.

What this statement does not claim

  • I hold no environmental certification, pledge or membership scheme. Nothing has been signed and nothing is being implied.
  • The footprint is not measured. There is no baseline, no figure and no reduction target. Publishing a number I had not measured would be worse than publishing none.
  • Forged Frameworks is not carbon neutral and does not offset. Neither claim would be true.
  • Compute energy use is selected for, not quantified. Choosing a renewable region is a preference exercised where available, not a measured reduction, and I cannot evidence it as one.
  • Most of the low footprint here follows from being one person working remotely rather than from any decision I made. That is stated plainly rather than presented as an achievement.

Review

This statement is reviewed annually, or sooner if the business changes shape in a way that alters the picture, for example taking on premises, staff or regular travel. Each version is dated and superseded versions remain in the repository history, so the position can be traced rather than quietly rewritten.
